Digital Corpus of the Greek Medical Papyri
Project goals
The CPGM (Corpus dei Papiri Greci di Medicina = Corpus of the Greek Medical Papyri) Online Project is aimed at creating a textual databank of the Greek papyri dealing with medical subjects, with a critical apparatus and a basic commentary, linked to an interactive database of the medical technical vocabulary of the papyri themselves.
Medical papyri are a corpus of about 300 texts of different size and complexity, including both documentary and literary pieces, the latter further divided into known authors and adespota. There is also a considerable group of so-called "paraliterary" or "subliterary" texts, mostly technical works of difficult categorization.
No current database contains the entire corpus of the Greek medical papyri, due to the technical and literary nature of most of them. The project's goal, therefore, is to complete the existing databanks, while integrating the sector of adespota and of the documentary papyri, in order to put at the disposal of the history of ancient medicine fundamental texts, otherwise available only through obsolete paper editions.
Project development
Thanks to its participation in the IDP international project (Integrating Digital Papyrology), phase 3, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the CPGM Online project can take advantage of an ad-hoc virtual environment ("ParmaMed Community") within the Papyrological Editor platform (SoSOL). In this way it has been possible to digitize the relevant texts directly in the Leiden+ markup language. For this sake, representatives of the Parma team took part to a SoSOL Training Session at the Duke University, Durham (NC, USA) on July 15-17, 2010.
The Parma team, which coordinates the project, works in close cooperation with American and European academic partners. Technical support and advice are provided by the IDP3-leading colleagues Joshua D. Sosin (Duke) and Roger S. Bagnall (ISAW, New York) as well as by James Cowey and Rodney Ast at the Institute of Papyrology of the Heidelberg University (Germany). Further significant cooperation has been launched, since December 2012, with the research project "Strengthening Research Capacity in the Papyrus Collection of the Oslo University" coordinated by Anastasia Maravela (Oslo), in particular as regards the development of the lexicographical databank Medicalia Online.
The starting phase has been called Pilot Project Herophilus and has led to the digitization of the Ammon archive (P.Ammon II) as a starting test case of complex documentary papyri, followed by the encoding of select specimina from the medical corpus, among which the huge Michigan Medical Codex (P.Mich. inv.21).
As of 2014 the CPGM project has been awarded with an Advanced Grant by the European Research Council (ERC Executive Agency - Seventh Framework Programme). This project title is "Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts" (Grant Agreement no. 339828: DIGMEDTEXT).
Subsequently, and after the end of the IDP3 Project, the Heidelberg Institute of Papyrology (Rodney Ast) and the ISAW at New York (Roger S. Bagnall) have launched a big project to develop a database for a digital corpus of the literary papyri (DCLP). The CPGM/DIGMEDTEXT project has been involved in it as a testing ground for completely new enconding challenges. The Parma project has therefore become focused not only on the digitization itself, but also on theoretical and practical issue of the digital encoding of the ancient texts.
